How it works

How a shell and plate heat exchanger works

Heat transfer core

Welded plate channels form the heat transfer core

Inside the shell and plate heat exchanger, the heat transfer surface is created by plates welded together into channels. These welded plate channels form a compact plate pack that sits inside the shell, combining plate heat transfer efficiency with a pressure‑vessel design.

Flow distribution

Flow diverters distribute media evenly

A flow diverter guides the incoming process media so it is evenly distributed across the plate pack. This controlled distribution ensures that the available heat transfer area is fully utilized, supporting stable and predictable thermal performance.

Flow arrangement

Flow paths are configured to match the duty

The internal plate arrangement allows different flow configurations depending on application requirements. Counter‑current, co‑current, or cross‑flow arrangements can be applied to achieve the required temperature profile and thermal performance.

Pressure containment

The shell provides structural integrity

The plate pack is enclosed within a cylindrical shell that acts as a pressure vessel. This shell provides mechanical support and pressure containment, allowing the exchanger to operate under elevated pressures and wide temperature ranges while maintaining a compact footprint.

Our recommendations

Where the shell and plate heat exchangers excel

Shell and plate heat exchangers are used across a range of applications where compactness, thermal efficiency, and mechanical integrity are required.

Energy Transition

The energy transition depends on efficient thermal processes, heat recovery, and reliable operation across emerging applications. Tranter energy process line shell and plate heat exchangers combine excellent thermal performance with the pressure and temperature capabilities required for hydrogen, carbon capture, renewable fuels, and other evolving energy systems. Their compact design helps operators maximize energy efficiency while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

Oil & Gas

Oil and gas facilities demand robust equipment capable of handling high pressures, large temperature variations, and challenging operating environments. With design pressures up to 130 bar and operating temperatures ranging from cryogenic conditions to 540°C, Tranter's shell and plate technology is suitable for upstream, midstream, and downstream duties. Its compact design reduces weight and space requirements compared to conventional shell-and-tube units, while the welded construction provides the durability required for critical process applications and energy recovery services.

Petrochemicals & Chemicals

In petrochemical and chemical processing, reliability and flexibility are critical due to aggressive fluids and varying process conditions. Tranter shell and plate technology combines the thermal efficiency of plate heat exchangers with the mechanical strength of shell-and-tube designs. Available in corrosion-resistant materials such as SMO254, Hastelloy, and titanium, the design can be tailored to meet specific process requirements while maintaining high heat recovery performance and long service life.

Power generation

Efficiency is a constant priority in power generation, making heat recovery and thermal optimization essential. Tranter's shell and plate units deliver high heat transfer coefficients and can be configured for counter-current, co-current, or crossflow arrangements to maximize thermal performance. Their compact footprint enables installation in both new and retrofit projects, helping operators recover more energy, reduce utility consumption, and improve overall plant efficiency across conventional and emerging power applications.

Pulp & Paper

Pulp and paper production relies heavily on heat recovery and process optimization to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs. Tranter shell and plate technology delivers high thermal performance in a compact, robust design, making it well suited for process heating, cooling, condensate duties, and energy recovery applications throughout the mill. The result is improved energy utilization and dependable long-term operation.
