Our Shell & Plate Heat Exchangers are operating reliably in vapor absorption or compression refrigeration in applications involving the range of refrigerants, to include carbon dioxide, ammonia and substituted hydrocarbons, in such duties as:
- Evaporators (flooded or direct expansion)
- Discharge desuperheaters for heat recovery
- Condensers (liquid-cooled)
- Condensate subcoolers for flooded evaporation
- Cascade system components for flooded ammonia or other refrigerants
- Compressor oil coolers

A Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger can serve as a heat source exchanger/generator that raises liquid refrigerant/water solution to the boiling point of the liquid refrigerant. A second Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger can serve as an ammonia gas condenser using a cold water source, and a third Tranter Shell & Plate unit can be employed as an expanded low-pressure ammonia liquid/brine refrigerant evaporator. Their close temperature approach and compact size optimizes efficiency, footprint and system cost.
Packaged Ammonia Chillers
In a packaged vapor compression ammonia chiller, Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchangers function as an ammonia vapor/cooling water condenser, an ammonia liquid-vapor/cooling water economizer for more complete ammonia condensation and as a liquid ammonia/chiller water evaporator.
Two-Stage Glycol/Ammonia Chiller
A two-stage vapor compression system uses one Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger as a glycol vapor/cooling water condenser, feeding an ammonia vapor/glycol liquid condenser, feeding a third Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger used as an ammonia liquid/refrigerant evaporator.
This system uses the Tranter Oblong-In-Tube (OIT) Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger as a knockout drum, accumulator, header tank and heat exchanger, all in one assembly. This fully welded oblong plate pack within a cylindrical shell is suitable for water/glycol chillers up to 250 TR using a variety of refrigerants. The OIT exchanger can substantially reduce overall installation costs of refrigeration skids, since it has no drip pans, shrouds or unnecessary vertical space.

Low-Charge Ammonia Chillers
A Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger can be furnished as a system comprising a low-pressure receiver and flooded heat exchanger in a low-charge ammonia/water chiller. The efficiency of the exchanger makes the very most of the ammonia charge, which can be lower in volume than with conventional technology, for a more compact system.
Tranter has supplied engineered components for an NH3– CO2 cascade refrigerating system serving a distribution center for a Dutch fruit, vegetable and exotics importer. Tranter supplied an ammonia separator, two NH3–CO2 cascade heat exchangers, a CO2 vessel and backup CO2 coolers, all based on Tranter Shell & Plate Heat Exchangers. They were selected for their small footprint and light weight, suitability at high pressure and low temperatures and high heat transfer rates that reduce the hold-up volume of potentially hazardous refrigerants.
