Co-Current Flow And Asymmetric Plates Prevent Waxing In Crude Cooling

Oyo, a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facility, is operated by Bumi Armada in the Oyo field off the shores of Nigeria. Crude from the field is characterized by a high wax point and a troublesome fouling tendency. Crude usually has a waxing temperature below 30°C (86°F), but Oyo’s crude waxes at 37°C (99°F).

Tranter, with proven applications expertise in upstream applications, proposed and supplied an efficient and cost effective solution to avoid fouling and poor heating performance. Tranter's Gasketed Plate Heat Exchanger solution changed the flow from counter-current to co-current, employing asymmetrical plates to raise the plate temperature to 37°C (99°F), maintaining the process design flow rate without waxing. The asymmetrical plates induce high shear rates on both sides of the Model GX-51 exchanger to prevent fouling layers from building up. The two units supplied to Oyo were manufactured from titanium alloy to resist the corrosive effects of seawater.
